Hearing the word Malay, Aklan for people going on a vacation. They will instantly think of the famous Boracay Island but on my schedule visit to Malay Aklan last August 2018. I intentionally skip Boracay but instead, I only had the mainland as my port of entry to the underrated Carabao Island of Romblon.
Traveling 5 hours from Iloilo City, I need to be a day ahead in Malay to catch the limited boat trip to Carabao island the next day. I don’t want to take the risk of leaving Iloilo early morning and catch the boat that will leave in the afternoon.
There are limited numbers of accommodation in mainland Malay Aklan, mostly these accommodations cater to the needs of people who intentionally visiting Boracay. — who has early or late flight and need a place to stay close to Caticlan Airport. Some stay in the mainland to travel to Carabao Island, others intentionally stay here
to discover what else Malay could offer aside from Boracay.
On my way to Aklan on a 5hrs bus trip from Iloilo, I have no idea where to stay in Mainland Malay as I never stayed here before but I know it will be easy to find one once I get there. I started to google some cheap accommodation and found Hangout Beach Resort. I messaged their Facebook page and asks if they have available room for today. I told them that I just need a basic room to sleep for a night.
Luckily, their Native Kubo is still available and gave it to me for only 600php with breakfast. HangOut Beach Resort is approximately 15 minutes away from Caticlan Jetty Port. From there, I took a tricycle that brought me to Barangay Motag.
Ate Yolly, the resort owner patiently waited for me together with her cats and dogs. as I arrived past 9:00 p.m She asked me if she will prepare dinner. I said that I’m full as I ate at Mang Inasal before going to the resort and I don’t want to bother anyone to cook food as I arrived late. I ordered beer instead.
We had some small talk while I’m drinking in the common area. It’s a small beach resort facing the island of Boracay. Some guests are playing billiards at that time. The resort also had a function room on the second floor of the receiving area that can cater to small meetings and parties.
Inside her small resort are different kinds of plants and flowers that give a more relaxing ambiance. There is also 3 story building aside from their 4 Native Kubos if you prefer an Air-conditioned type of room.
Their beach area is a good place to watch the sunset and will give you the same unobstructed point of view from Boracay Island.
Their Nipa Hut room is good for 2 with a double size bed, fan, and a private bathroom. Its basic and just everything I need for my overnight stay in Aklan.
They are known in the local neighborhood as a good place to eat and hangout with your friends if you need to unwind or drink with and have Karaoke.
Just last 2019, I was also able to revisit and tried staying in their Air-conditioned room after I visited Boracay. I wanted to explore Hinugtan Beach in Aklan so as same as before I need to look for a place to stay in Mainland Malay. They offer scooter rental so we can drive from the resort going to Hinugtan Beach.
As always, Hangout Beach Resort feels like home. The people are nice and the food is delicious. They are also making renovations to improved their rooms and facilities like their restaurant and bar area.
